The Motorola ROKR E8 has been one of the talked about mobile phones during the 2008 CES. During that time, Motorola already announced its plan to sell its ailing mobile phone division. The ROKR E8 looked like a promising device that may help Motorola nab its previously held number two position as a mobile phone manufacturer. Let’s take a look and see whether the Motorola ROKR E8 will save Motorola.
Design
One of the reasons why the Motorola ROKR E8 was much talked about during the CES 2008 was because of its design. The ROKR E8 is a slim, candy bar that has this innovative “mode-shift” technology. The mode-shift technology changes the Motorola ROKR E8’s keypad according to what function is being used (phone, music player, camera). I have to admit, that is a very cool feature. I was expecting some sort of hidden keypad or an actual keypad but it turns out that the whole device looks like a touch screen phone with only a few points to guide users towards the right keys. It is somewhat similar to the front music control keys of the RAZR2 series and the V6 Maxx. Like the RAZR2 series, the Motorola ROKR E8 offers haptic feedback. Though Motorola got it right in terms of design, the ROKR E8 will be a disappointment for avid texters as it takes a while getting used to the keys.
Features
The Motorola ROKR E8 is of course, a music phone, judging from the way that it is designed to look like an MP3 player and since of course, Motorola decided to add it to their ROKR line. For the audio quality, I have to say that this is one of the better music phones I’ve encountered. Even the speaker is good and when I used a MP3 file for my ringtone, I actually forgot that it was my phone ringing and thought that the sound came from a CD player. The ROKR E8 also has a built-in FM tuner and a 2GB internal memory. Another downside of this phone is that the microSD card is located in the battery compartment.
The camera is pretty decent though not as great as dedicated camera phones out in the market but it can do the job. Love that it can still work even in low light conditions compared with my previous HTC P3600i PDA phone.
The Motorola ROKR E8 is a love-it or hate-it kind of mobile phone. For those so used to text messaging, they would definitely hate the ROKR E8’s interface but music lovers and fashionistas will love the E8’s audio playback quality and design.
Cell phones have changed the way people communicate forever. Used to be, mobile phones are just used for calling, then came text messages, and now, mobile phones can also be used for sending email.
Text messages, however, can take a toll on your phone credits so some people use online sms messaging software. Here are just some of the online sms tools on the web. Web SMS from Message Media
Web SMS is not a free service, however, you can try out their software for free. With Web SMS, you can send bulk sms messages online. You also need not have any software as everything is done on their web interface. Web SMS is perfect for companies that do their promotions through SMS.
OnlineTextMessage.com
OnlineTextMessage.com is a free service, however, be ready to have your email account spammed. When sending SMS on their site, be sure you’re using a secondary email account. Also, their SMS sending is unreliable. My text messages were only sent two out of 5 times. I gave up trying after.
Chikka.com
You need to download a software in order to use Chikka.com. Don’t worry, there’s no spyware or anything. The Chikka messenger is popular in the Philippines, however, countries wherein you can send SMS messages to are limited, plus text messages you send are also limited as you are only allocated a certain number of messages per day. As for the reliability of this product, the possibility of your message coming through is four out five so that’s pretty high.
Conclusion
If you’re looking to online SMS messaging for your company’s use, I suggest that you just go for the paid service. With the free services, you get what you paid for, or in their case, you don’t actually pay anything so don’t expect anything.
One of Nokia's upcoming phone is the Nokia 5320 XpressMusic. Following on the heels of the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic, the Nokia 5320 however deviated from the original design of the Nokia 5310. First off, the Nokia 5320 is wee bit thicker and larger than its predecessor. This might be a good thing for some since the 5320 would provide them with a more solid feel.
The Nokia 5320 XpressMusic is, I think, the first XpressMusic phone to feature HSDPA. Music lovers would just love that since HSDPA would provide them faster over the air downloads of their favorite music. The Nokia 5320 is not only made for music lovers but for gamers as well since it features dedicated music and N-gage gaming keys. This phone also features Nokia's Say and Play, a voice controlled music player.
Other notable features on the Nokia 5320 XpressMusic includes: a 2 megapixel camera, FlashLite 3.0, FM radio with RDS, and a 140MB internal memory expandable with microSD card. The Nokia 5320 also features a dedicated audio chip that will let you listen to your favorite songs in high audio quality.
I have previously tested the sound quality on Nokia XpressMusic phones and I have to say that it's really good. If the Nokia 5320 has a dedicated audio chip, then sound quality on this phone would probably be better, in which case, be sure to load up your phone with T-Pain ringtones or Kanye West Ringtones in order to let people around you know how phat is your mobile phone.
If the U9 is to Motorola, then the 6600 Fold is to Nokia. The Nokia 6600 Fold features the same hidden screen as the Motorola U9.
The Nokia 6600 Fold is slightly smaller and slimmer than the Motorola U9. This phone has a 2.13" OLED screen that can display up to 16 million colors. I think that the Nokia 6600 Fold is the first non-Prism phone that sports an OLED screen. The OLED screen I've seen on the Nokia Prism phones delivers a high contrast display with vibrant colors so if you're going to buy this phone, be sure that you have mobile wallpapers that are colorful. Let's hope that it also has a live wallpaper like the Prism.
The hidden outer display of the Nokia 6600 Fold can reveal time, incoming messages, missed calls, etc, when you tap the display twice. As for the features, this phone has 3G, an 18MB internal memory expandable with MicroSD slot, a 2 megapixel camera with double LED Flash, FM radio tuner, compatible with polyphonic and MP3 ringtones, and a media player with multi-format support.
Though not really a powerful phone, feature-wise, the Nokia 6600 is a medium-range phone, style-wise, the hidden display and OLED screen is something to watch out for.
Mobile Phones come in different designs nowadays. But if you’re looking for a traditional phone that has a very simple design, the Nokia 6500 classic may suit you.
Design
The Nokia 6500 Classic is a slim candy bar phone. It’s probably the slimmest Nokia phone I’ve come across but then again, I haven’t had that many ever since Windows Mobile came my way. Anyways, the Nokia 6500 classic’s casing is made from anodized aluminum. Whatever that is, it sure made the Nokia 6500 classic look so classy.
Advantages
Though the Nokia 6500 Classic looks simple enough, don’t let its exterior fool you. Underneath this simple yet elegant design lays a 1GB onboard memory. It’s not exactly enough to store your music collection but you can store some pics and some your selected few favorite songs to pass the time. And of course, let’s not forget that the Nokia 6500 Classic is 3G capable. With it’s two inch display and if you have Opera Mini installed, you can do a quick check of your favorite blog or read up on your current events. The two inch display does a good job of viewing images and is readable under direct sunlight.
The Nokia 6500 Classic also supports Bluetooth stereo A2DP plus call quality is actually good. Music quality through headphones is passable but it’s not a music phone.
Complaints
Although the Nokia 6500 Classic has a 1GB onboard memory, it doesn’t have an expansion slot so you’re limited to what you have. The 6500 Classic has a 2 megapixel camera with LED flash but there’s no autofocus so don’t expect the image quality to wow you.
I don’t know what Nokia’s designers are thinking with the keypad. If you’re using SMS as much as I do, you know that a raised bezel should be the one to push on a mobile phone, however, on the Nokia 6500 Classic, it’s not the raised bezel that you press on the keypad but the one above it. This handset is obviously not made for speed texting.
Also, I thought that all Nokia phones come standard with FM tuners. I mean, their low-end phones have one so why they didn’t put one on the Nokia 6500 Classic is beyond me.
Conclusion
If you’re a businessman who’s just looking for a simple phone that can let you make calls, with the added plus of 3G, then the Nokia 6500 Classic may be right up your alley. However, those looking for a sleek phone that is packed with features, you’re better off getting more bang for your buck with other handsets.
I've rounded up some of the web browsers I've been using on my windows mobile device and summarized the pros and cons of each browser. Hopefully, by the end of this article, you will be able to make your own informed decision regarding which web browser you will use for your Windows Mobile device.
Opera Mini
The Opera Mini is the first web browser that I've found that blew me away. It was introduced during the iPhone hype and every windows mobile user wants a Safari Browser on their mobile phones. Well, I stumbled upon the Opera Mini during my search for a pocket pc version of the Safari browser. The Opera Mini is a java application so you have to run it on the midlet manager of your windows mobile device.
Pros:
Fast rendering of web pages
Smooth zooming
Can view web pages on desktop mode or single column mode
Smooth scrolling when using touch interface on touch screen phones
Cons:
No tabbed browsing
Data passes through servers so careful when visiting secured pages
Cannot view flash-based sites
Cannot copy and paste text
NetFront Browser 3.5
I've come across NetFront Browser during my regular visits to some windows mobile forums.
Pros:
Supports tabbed browsing
Smooth scrolling with touch screen phones
Supports Java and Ajax
Can copy and paste text
Can easily switch away from scrolling mode so you can easily click on links
Cons:
Mediocre page rendering
Doesn't support flash-based websites
Skyfire Beta
I was one of the lucky ones to have the first Skyfire Beta release since most of the guys at the windows mobile forums still haven't gotten their copy even though they have signed up before I did.
Pros:
Supports youtube in browser
Supports some flash-based websites
Cons:
Slow buffering of youtube videos
Doesn't support copy and paste function
Slow rendering of web pages
Slow zoom in and out function
Data passes through servers
Opera Browser 9.5
The Opera Browser 9.5 is also in Beta. I was only able to download it from XDA-Developers.
Pros: Fast rendering of web pages Smooth Zooming functions Has Copy and Paste Function
Cons: Does not support Full desktop YouTube (I don't know whether the problem is with the version I've downloaded since a guy at Youtube has posted a video of him using Opera Browser 9.5 for watching youtube videos. The video was blurry so I can't really tell if this video is real or fake)
Conclusion:
Of the overall browsers, my personal favorite is Opera Browser 9.5. It's the only decent browser among the bunch that can render web pages faster and has a smooth transition of zooming in and out of web pages. However, I use this in combination with Skyfire Beta. Whenever I have to visit some flash-based websites, I use Skyfire Beta since it's the only browser among the bunch that supports flash-based websites.
So I guess there's still no perfect browser for the Windows Mobile platform. Hopefully, if Skyfire is able to address their rendering issues and is able to render web pages faster without the use of data servers, it would become the browser to beat not only in the Windows Mobile arena but in the mobile browser category.
Mobile Phone Flashing is a process wherein a mobile phone's firmware (or program inside your phone's memory) is updated or re-programmed. Like computers, some mobile phones which are sold have some minor software glitches. Things like your phone restarting, hanging, no signal, etc, are signs that there are problems with your phone's firmware.
To resolve this issues, mobile phone manufacturers usually come up with software updates for mobile phones and the process wherein these updates are incorporated into your mobile phone is referred to as "flashing".
Flashing does not unlock your phone or remove operator restrictions. Unlocking your mobile phone is a completely different process but some unlocking procedures usually involve flashing a phone's firmware so many people have the misconception that flashing your mobile phone will unlock it.
Flashing your mobile phone is pretty straightforward. If you follow the instructions well, you won't encounter problems. There are some people, however, who are not comfortable flashing their mobile phones since they're afraid that they would "brick" their mobile phone (a bricked mobile phone is when your phone does not power up anymore) so they let professionals or service centers handle it.
If you're comfortable with technology, instructions for flashing your mobile phone can usually be found on mobile phone forums. Google it and you'll find a lot of mobile phone resources talking about flashing.
So HTC has announced another new HTC Touch, the HTC Touch Diamond. Frankly, this is what, the fourth time that HTC had a go at being iPhone’s main competitor? So, is the fourth time a charm? Let’s find out. Just a word of warning to iPhone haters, I’m not Apple fanboy, but frankly, HTC is just trying too hard at making an iPhone copycat.
Design
The HTC Touch Diamond still has the same 2.8 inch screen as other regular PDA phones. What is wrong with upping it to 3 inch, HTC? The design of the HTC Touch Diamond is reminiscent of the Nokia Prism phones, with diamond like patterns on the back of the device. Unlike the iPhone, the HTC Touch Diamond has a circular directional pad, much like the one in HTC Touch Cruise. Since HTC didn’t copy the iPhone’s design right off the bat, I have to give them points for design. The HTC Touch Diamond is one gorgeous, sleek phone. Specifications and Features
The HTC Touch Diamond is a HUGE improvement from other HTC phones. Instead of the usual 400 MHz processor, you will get a Qualcomm MSM 7201A 528MHz processor plus you get a 192MB RAM. You’d think that the HTC Touch Diamond’s interface would be faster with the RAM and processor and all, however, the interface is still quite sluggish compared with the iPhone but a much better improvement from the HTC Touch Cruise’s sluggish interface. To get an idea of what I'm talking about, check out Slashgear's hands-on video:
Again, let me reiterate that I am no iPhone fan but I have to say that they did a damn good job creating their multi touch interface. Until now, not one mobile phone manufacturer was able to replicate or come close to their multi-touch interface. The TouchFLO 3D on the HTC Touch Diamond only offers animated icons but still no improvement to the previous TouchFLO interface. The HTC Diamond’s interface also looks like a rip off of iPhone’s home menu.
As for the browser, I’ll give points to the HTC Touch Diamond. The browser looks awesome plus the scroll wheel allows you to zoom in on web pages slowly rather than zoom in instantly on the web page. There was also little to no rendering when zooming in on web pages which makes the browser on the HTC Touch Diamond probably the best web browser for any pocket pc phones. Better than NetFront Browser 3.5 and Skyfire browser even, although I don’t think that it supports flash for youtube videos since there’s a separate application that you can launch for watching YouTube videos.
The HTC Touch Diamond is purely a touch screen phone, there’s no slide out QWERTY keyboard or anything, everything is on screen so for those who are tired of using touch screen keyboards (like me), this would probably turn you off. My suggestion is to wait for the Sony Xperia X1 since it has almost the same specifications but has a slide-out QWERTY pad.
The camera on the HTC Touch diamond seems promising, 3.2 mega pixel with auto focus so I hope the auto focus will allow users to get clearer shots than the previous HTC Phones. Other features of the HTC Touch Diamond includes: a built in accelerometer (Screen changes automatically from landscape to portrait mode), GPS, HSDPA connectivity, WiFi, and a generous 4GB internal storage (I think this is a first from HTC). Check out the HTC Touch Diamond's youtube video:
Conclusion
I love my windows mobile phone that’s why you can’t peg me for being an iPhone lover, however, the way that HTC is trying to hard to copy everything on the iPhone can sometimes get irritating. I mean, one good thing about having a windows mobile phone is the ability to brag about it, not to mention that most windows mobile phone have a hefty price tag, specially the ones from HTC (if bought without a contract). However, if they keep trying to copy the iPhone—well, there’s no sense showing off a product that looks like a rip-off of an original one, right?
However if you look beyond the too many iPhone rip-off features of the HTC Touch Diamond, this looks like one promising device. If they are able to go beyond the issues such as the scroll wheel not responding or sluggish performance, it may even surpass the iPhone. For those looking for a QWERTY keyboard, I suggest that, like me, you just wait for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. It basically has the same features (processor, RAM, WiFi, GPS, etc) but with the added slide-out QWERTY.
Anyways, good job on this one, HTC. Next time, don’t try too hard.
It's hard to make a conference call on a mobile phone, however, talkster makes it easy on the iPhone. Talkster is a simple phone conference widget designed for the iPhone that allows users to easily make group calls.
In order to use Talkster, iPhone users should direct their browsers to http://i.talkster.com/.
LG has recently unveiled their recent addition to their black label series: The LG Secret. The LG Secret or LG KF750 is a stylish slider phone with a 5 mega pixel camera.
The LG Secret incorporates the finest and strongest materials. Made of carbon fiber, a strong material used in jets, the LG secret can withstand some of the common accidents that befall mobile phones. The tempered glass on the LG KF750 adds to its stylish design and the neon touch navigation buttons accents the phone's front panels.
Like the LG Viewty, the LG KF750 boasts a 5 megapixel camera and 120 fps video and DivX playback. The LG secret is also equipped with a motion sensor so the screen automatically changes from landscape to portrait mode when you move your phone horizontally or vertically.
Undoubtedly, the LG KF750 will be one anticipated phone.
One of the things I like about the series 60 Nokia mobile phones are the customizable themes. There are a lot of Nokia series 60 themes that can be found on the net and it can include your favorite cartoon character, movie star, or just a good landscape picture.
You can usually get these themes for free but some online UK sites charges for downloads. Nokia n73 mobile themes would also work with Symbian S60 3rd Edition 240x320 themes. The Symbian S60 240x320 themes are also compatible with Nokia N92, N71, N93, N95, N75, 6290, 6121, 6120, E50, etc.
There are three ways that you can install your Nokia themes on your phone. One is through over the air downloads, in which case, you just go directly to the site with your chosen theme, click on the link, and follow the instructions on your phone.
If you’re downloading the themes on your PC, there are two ways you can install it on your mobile phone. One is through the Nokia PC suite, and the other is through Bluetooth or data cable transfer. Here are the instructions:
Using Nokia PC Suite:
1. Connect your phone to your PC and turn on the Nokia PC Suite or wait for the application to start. 2. Click on the “Install Applications” 3. When a window appears, browse to where you have saved the downloaded themes using the left part of the window. 4. Select your chosen theme and then press the arrow in the middle of the window 5. Follow the instructions on your phone screen and you’re done.
Bluetooth or Data transfer (only for N-series and newer phone versions)
1. Data transfer. Connect your phone via USB cable and select “data transfer” on the mode menu. When you connect your phone and it shows up as a removable disk, transfer the theme on your phone’s storage card. You can install the theme by using the file manager and selecting the theme to install.
2. Bluetooth. If your friend has a theme on their phone, you can have them transfer it on your phone via Bluetooth transfer. The theme will appear on your messages and to install it, simply click on the transferred file on your messages and follow the prompts.
