Compare HTC Legend vs. Motorola Milestone

Written on 4/29/2010 09:14:00 AM by poison_ivy

Yes, another comparison this time with the HTC Legend and the Motorola Milestone. These two seems much more logical to  be pitted against each other because they have more similar specs and along similar price points (unlocked). So let the battle begin.

Design

I feel sorry for Motorola for being put against a phone having aluminum unibody but before we chalk one up for the HTC Legend, let's be fair and look at both mobile phone's advantages.

First, an aluminum unibody is clearly more beautiful compared with a solid rectangular brick that is the Motorola Milestone but what the HTC Legend lacks is physical QWERTY keybaord. Users who feel the need for a physical keyboard would gravitate more towards the Milestone since let's face it, it's still currently the thinnest mobile phone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard available on the market and that in itself is a design feat comparable with an aluminum unibody. But take out the keyboard and base it on aesthetics alone, then I have to admit that it's the HTC Legend who wins here.

O2 subscribers who're feeling left out that the HTC Desire is available on Vodafone and T-Mobile can now rejoice because O2 posted on their blog that the HTC Desire is expected to come to the network mid-May although someone mentioned that it's around May 10. Anyways, you can get the HTC Desire for free with a £35 a month contract and you can get 600 minutse, unlimited text and unlimited data. Here's a breakdown of HTC Desire O2 Tariff:

Nokia N8

2

Written on 4/27/2010 01:53:00 PM by poison_ivy

Nokia has recently made official their newest mobile phone: the Nokia N8. The Nokia N8 runs on Nokia's newest OS, the Symbian^3. So, is the Symbian^3 enough to compete with the iPhone, Android and Windows Phone 7? My impressions of this handset  is based on the early review of the Nokia N8 from mobile-review.

Design

The Nokia N8 will have a 3.5 inch capacitive, AMOLED touchscreen with multi-touch input. Multitouch will be a first for Nokia as the previous version of Symbian doesn't support multitouch. The N8 will initially be available in five different colors: Dark grey, Green, Blue, Silver White, and Orange. There's not much information in terms of what materials the N8 will be built but mobile-review says that build quality is actually good.

Features

I was pretty excited about Symbian^3. I thought Nokia would finally come up with something great. However, looking at pictures from mobile-review website, I was actually disappointed. The UI looks the same, the homescreen looks the same as the Nokia N97 Mini. Too bad there were no videos to see how responsive the screen is or how they implemented multitouch. Although the UI is a disappointment, the Nokia N8 has a lot of features to offer.

First is the 12 megapixel camera, although Nokia is not the first phone company to release a 12 megapixel camera, they're still one of the best manufacturers of camera phones. The Nokia N8 also features 720p video recording, again, this is not the first for a mobile phone but we'll have to see initial video samples of the N8's video to see how it fairs against the Vivaz or Samsung's i8910 HD. What is first is that Nokia's latest mobile phone has a mini-HDMI port. Hopefully, Nokia would include the cable in the package rather than us buyers buying it separately, but then again, we better not get our hopes up.

Other features that the Nokia N8 can boast about is 16GB internal storage expandable up to 32GB with a microSD card, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Oh, and let's not forget that Symbian^3 allows cross-platform apps so any apps that will be developed for Meego and Symbian will be compatible with Symbian^3.

Outlook

A lot of tech-savvy folks may be disappointed with Symbian^3 on the Nokia N8 but let's not forget that die-hard Nokia fans are fans because of how easy Symbian's interface is. No matter how many times you switch Nokia phones, the learning curve is almost nil because the UI is the same. So maybe Nokia is going the tried and tested way and decided not to tweak Symbian^3 that much. After all, they're still number one in the world market.

Google Nexus One Available for Pre-order on Vodafone, coming this April 30

Well, as they say, better late than never--or is it? Has the availability of the HTC Desire, HTC Legend, and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 rendered the Nexus One obsolete? I guess Vodafone would soon find out since they've already put up the pre-order page for the Nexus One [aff]. The Google handset would be shipping on April 30.

With a price plan of free from £35 a month tariff, some may be turned off by the pricing especially since the HTC Desire is £5 a month cheaper and the HTC Legend £15 a month cheaper. But as I've mentioned in my HTC Legend vs. HTC Desire vs. Google Nexus One vs. Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 comparison, the fact that this is a Google Phone means that it's more likely to get frequent updates compared with the others who all have custom UIs (harder to update. see HTC Hero).

Check my Nexus One Review to see if this mobile phone might interest you. Alternatively, check out the separate HTC Legend Review and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Review. Full press release after the break.

New Orange Mobile Phones in April

Whether it's time for an upgrade or you're just tired of your phone provider and you're thinking of switching to Orange, well now's the best time because Orange has some new mobile phones in its portfolio.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, HTC Desire, Sony Ericsson Vivaz, Samsung Monte, and Sony Ericsson Elm are the newest addition to Orange's contract mobile phone plans. Sorry, these mobile phones are not yet available on Orange PAYG but I'll watch their page once in a while as they might turn up on PAYG especially the Sony Ericsson Elm and Samsung Monte. In my experience, mobile phones which are offered for free on the cheapest monthly contract plans are usually the first to be offered on PAYG.

Also something to watch out for is the Samsung Wave, Samsung first mobile phone with their own Bada OS. This will probably be available on Orange come June.

    Samsung Monte Review

    10

    Written on 4/22/2010 03:47:00 PM by poison_ivy

So, we have another mobile phone to review: the Samsung Monte S5620. Now Samsung has a lot of feature phones out in the market,  there's the semi-low end Samsung CorbyPro, the mid-range Samsung Jet Ultra, and a pletora of low-end touchscreen mobile phones. SO where does the Samsung Monte fit in? It's somewhere between the Samsung Genio Slide and the Ultra Jet. Let's see how it stacks up against it brothers.

    Samsung Monte Deals [aff]:

    Samsung Monte Specifications

    • GSM 850/900/1800/900 3G 900/2100
    • 3" capacitive touchscreen 256k colors, 240x400 pixel resolution
    • 200MB internal memory expandable via microSD slot
    • 3.5mm headset jack
    • microUSB slot
    • Bluetooth A2DP
    • WiFi, GPS
    • 3.2 megapixel camera with smile shot
    • FM radio

    Design

The Samsung Monte is almost the same size as the Samsung Jet albeit a bit thicker but the Monte is definitely lighter than the Jet. The S5620 has a 3 inch capacitive touchscreen, sorry, no AMOLED screen here. You'll just have to make do with a TFT LCD screen. Sammy is making good on its promise with the European Commission to make its mobile phones have standard microUSB ports. On the Monte, this is located on top together with the 3.5mm headset jack. One thing I like abou the Samsung Monte's design is that the microSD slot is located outside, protected by a thin plastic flap. Below the screen is the call and end buttons and the menu button.

One thing I do like on the Samsung Monte compared with the Samsung Jet is the overall design. The Monte is definitely more eyecatching than the Jet and I'm sure it will appeal to a wide audience (especially younger ones).

    Features

The Samsung Monte is no smartphone but it has features just like one: 3G, accelerometer, GPS, and WiFi. So, it has features just like a smartphone but does it act like one? Well, it has a capacitive touchscreen and scrolling through the menus is fast, kinetic scrolling too but when you open some applications, you'll notice some lags and you'll realize that the Monte is really not a smartphone.

In the messaging application, you get the alphanumeric keypad as your default input option. No QWERTY keypad even in landscape mode. That may be a turn-off for some but the I'm actually pretty used to multi-tap and its really responsive.

Audio quality through the speakers is pretty loud, standard for Samsung phones nowadays and quality is decent though gets tinny at higher volumes. You can stream audio through a Bluetooth headset or using the bundled headset. Audio quality through the headset is great so the Monte is definitely a good music player and it can playback MP3, AAC, AAC+, and WMA files. I'm a bit disappointed that the Monte doesn't have DivX playback, that would've been awesome but you'll have to make do converting your videos to MPEG4, H.263, or H.264.

The acceleromter is a bit fiddly especially when viewing photos in landscape mode. The web browser is not as blazing fast compared with the iPhone or on Android mobile phones but it is useable. There's supposed to be flash but like on the Genio Slide, I can't seem to get it to work.

The Samsung Monte only has 3.2 megapixel camera. It's standard on today's mid-range mobile phones and Samsung has already proven itself in the camera phone department so even if the S5620 doesn't have autofocus or flash, it still takes decent photos, kinda like on the Samsung Galaxy Portal.

    Conclusion

If you're ready to upgrade from your Samsung Genio Touch or LG Cookie and ready to experience WiFi and 3G on your mobile phone, the Samsung Monte is a nice choice without breaking the bank. Good music player, a good browser and decent camera are some of the things it can brag about but if you're missing a physical QWERTY keyboard or a landscape keyboard, there's always the Samsung Genio Slide or the Samsung Jet Ultra.

France to get Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus first

Looks like France will get the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus ahead of O2 and Vodafone Germany. According to Palm's latest press release, SFR in France will sell the WebOS mobile phones on their online store on April 27 while SFR's retail stores will get these handsets come May 11. That's one day ahead of the expected availability of the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus in Germany which were previously pegged on April 28th. Full press release after the break.

    HTC Legend USB Drivers

    Written on 4/21/2010 04:12:00 PM by poison_ivy

So, you've probably seen my HTC Legend Review I posted a few days back. Unlike my other reviews, I wasn't able to post some screenshots because I was having a hard time installing USB drivers for the HTC Legend. Well, I downloaded the latest USB drivers from the Android website through Android SDK (you need this software to take screenshots on your HTC Legend).

Even though it was the latest drivers, my Windows XP still can't recognize the HTC Legend so I did some searching and came upon this site.

In order for the HTC Legend to be recognized by the Android SDK, open the android_winusb.inf file under the usb_driver folder and add

    ;HTC Legend
    %SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C97
    %CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C97&MI_01

under the [Google.NTx86]. Here's a screenshot of where I put it.

After that, under Device Manager, update the drivers for your HTC Legend and it should detect and install the drivers automatically.

    Orange to release Boston handset

Orange is set to release its own branded Android handset made by Foxxcon and to be named the Orange Boston. The Orange Boston will be aimed at the lower-end of the market. With specs of 600Mhz processor, a 3.2-inch LCD screen with resolution of 480 x 320, 5-megapixel camera, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, GPS, microSD slot and a headphone jack, this certainly looks like a competitor of the HTC Legend and Samsung Galaxy Portal but rumor has it that its price is only 1 Euro.

The Orange Boston will be launched across Europe soon.

Apple requests Gizmodo to hand over iPhone 4G prototype

Still in doubt about whether the leaked photos floating around the Internet of the iPhone 4G are true? Well, what better confirmation than from Apple themselves?

Apparently, Apple wrote to Gizmodo that they turn over the prototype that their software engineer left in a bar stool near Apple's headquarters in Cupertino. And as if Apple's ire won't be enough for this software engineer, Telegraph has named the poor guy. Now he will be forever remembered in history as the poor chap who inadvertently outed the iPhone 4G on a bar!

Oh well, at least we have a confirmation not to buy the 3GS because it will soon be replaced in June.

iPhone 4G pictures leaked plus video

Over the weekend, I saw some pictures of Apple's alleged new iPhone pictures over at Engadget. I was about to write a post about it but 30 minutes later, Engadget said that it was fake. Two days later, they've confirmed that it's apparently the real thing because they've seen pictures of it side by side with a leaked picture of the iPad. Another few hours later and Gizmodo had some hands-on time with the device and it seems to be REALLY the next iPhone.

Anyways, grabbed some pictures of the new iPhone plus video after the jump. My thoughts? It looks ugly and thicker than the current iPhone. What happened to the curved edges? I would also have preferred some sharp edges like the Xperia X10. The good news is that its girth is slightly thinner than the current 3GS so it's more suitable for one hand use. I was hoping to buy the next iPhone but after seeing the photos, I'm having second thoughts.

So, what do you get when you cross a Macbook Pro with an HTC Hero? The HTC Legend, the first mobile phone to have an aluminum unibody. But aside from the design, can the HTC Legend live up to its predecessor, the HTC Hero? Read on for my HTC Legend Review.

    Design

I was expecting to be wowed by the Legend's aluminum unibody but I wasn't. There's nothing really special about it, in fact, some of my friends even mistook it for the HTC Hero (so much for bragging rights). Maybe if they lost the chin it would be much more appealing. Also, one of the disadvantages of a mobile phone being made mostly of metal, is that you'll worry a lot about it being scratched. I have a carrying pouch with a zipper and every time I put it inside and it makes contact with the zipper, I cringe and feel like I'm scratching the surface. Good news is that its not easily scratched.

The battery can be found under the rubber covering on the backside of the chin. It's not a pop up battery cover, you have to slide it to open it but its still hard to put it back. The optical D-Pad is also a nice touch although I noted that it's a bit too sensitive as it jumps two letters whenever I try to go back or forward.

Overall, the aluminum unibody of the HTC Legend is nice and has a solid build, it can turn heads but its not really that eye-catching (or maybe I was just expecting too much from it).

Sony Ericsson Xperia X2a available on Sony Style stores in US

As an avid gadget fan, I'm subscribed to dozens of newsletters from retailers here and in the US. A newsletter from SonyStyle US a few days ago actually made me laugh out loud. It was an announcement for the Sony Ericsson Satio and Sony Ericsson Xperia X2. I could understand the Satio but the Xperia X2?! Come on! Vodafone passed on it because apparently, the hardware is so outdated and now they're trying to sell it unlocked in the US and get this: for $599.99!!!

Okay, so let's all catch our breath from that good laugh. For our friends in the US who're avid Sony Ericsson fans and are reading this, please, plese, please, save a few more bucks and just go for the Xperia X10, the software may be dated but the hardware isn't. If there's one thing you don't want on a mobile phone, it's an outdated hardware because you can't upgrade it unlike an outdated software (like on the X10) which you can easily update over the air or through your PC.

Samsung Monte Shows up on Vodafone

Looks like Vodafone is beefing up its affordable touchscreen mobile phones. They already have the Samsung Genio, LG Cookie, Samsung Genio Slide, and now Samsung Monte joins the bunch.(You can check out my Samsung Monte Review).

Vodafone is offering the Samsung Monte for £15 a month contract, similar to what they're offering for the Genio Slide. You can't see it yet on pay as you go but like the Genio Slide, we'll probably see it on PAYG in a few months.

The Samsung Monte features a 3.2 megapixel camera, WiFi, 3G, and a built-in GPS: high end features on an affordable mobile phone.

You can order the Samsung Monte from Vodafone's website [aff].

Xperia X10 To Get Multitouch and Android 2.1 in September?

    2

    Written on 4/16/2010 04:56:00 PM by poison_ivy

According to mobiles.co.uk, during the launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, a rep said that the X10 is due for a very "big" update come second half of 2010, around September maybe. A lot have been speculating that this is Android 2.1 and according to mobiles.co.uk's inside man, multi-touch is also on the table as it seems the limitations is not hardware based. But does this mysterious employee know more than Sony Ericsson's product manager? Then again, this could be a ploy to get more people to buy the X10 over the HTC Desire, Nexus One, or the Legend.

I know what you're thinking--September?! That's 5 months from now and by that time, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 would be overshadowed by something much more--Incredible? And if not something incredible, maybe something EVOlutionary?! But still, it's good news for current owners of the X10 but then again, if I were you, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Those who're thinking of getting the X10, with or without multi-touch, can check out my Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Review to see if it's worth your time.

HTC Incredible Makes it ways to Verizon US

    0

    Written on 4/15/2010 03:43:00 PM by poison_ivy

Sure, the US doesn't have the tough choice between the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, HTC Legend, HTC Desire and Google Nexus One but would-be Android owners would have a difficult task ahead of them with the announcement of the HTC Incredible. Now there's more than two awesome Android handsets competing in the US smartphone market. Before, it was a choice between the Motorola Droid and Nexus One but now with Sprint's HTC EVO and Verizon's new HTC Incredible, the US Android market is also becoming fragmented.

Though it doesn't have WiMax to boast of like the HTC EVO from Sprint, the HTC Incredible has 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 3.7 inch AMOLED screen, Android 2.1, Sense UI, and 8 megapixel camera. Hmm, sounds like the HTC Desire only with an upgraded camera.

According to Verizon's website, the HTC Incredible should be available around April 29th. I wonder how will this affect the CDMA version of the Nexus One? Jeez, it's only been four months since the Nexus One was released and now its slowly becoming obsolete.

Apple iPad will be availble on Vodafone, O2, and Orange in May

    Written on 4/15/2010 09:35:00 AM by poison_ivy

Those who are eagerly anticipating Apple's launch of their "revolutionary device" called the iPad may have to wait a few more weeks as Apple reportedly delayed the international launch because of high demand in the US. The Apple iPad will be available for Pre-order come May 10, prices would also be announced around that time.

Vodafone, Orange, and O2 have all signed up to supply the iPad here in the UK. There are two versions of the iPad, one with WiFi only and the other with WiFi and 3G connection. Both versions are available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB varieties.

If you can't wait for the iPad until May, if you have relatives or friends in the US, you can always ask them to buy one for you and you can have them send it here in the UK. Of course, you'll be charged VAT and probably import duties but at least you're one of the first to own the iPad. Also, a word of advice, Apple has limit the iPad to two per customer so be sure to find someone in the US to get one for you before used up their allocated stock.

    Sony Ericsson Elm Review

    2

    Written on 4/14/2010 01:28:00 PM by poison_ivy

Reviewed by Roger, translated and worded by moi.

Vodafone has a new phone in its portfolio: The Sony Ericsson Elm. Now while the Sony Ericsson Elm may seem overshadowed by the likes of the HTC Legend, Nokia N900, Xperia X10 and HTC Desire, I'm sure it will find some sort of following for those who've missed the traditional candy bar mobile phones.

    Design

The Sony Ericsson Elm is part of Sony Ericsson's Greenheart line and from its name, you can certainly glean that this phone is environmentally friendly. According to Sony Ericsson, the Greenheart line will be made from recycled plastic and eco-friendly materials, plus it will be packaged using recycled materials too.

The mobile phone's facade is almost similar to most Sony Ericsson phones such as the T700. The phone is made up of a combination of plastic and aluminum. The keys have a nice tactile feedback unlike the Sony Ericsson Yari's keypad which is flat. The Sony Ericsson Elm has a curved back and you can remove the battery cover by popping it open.

There's nothing revolutionary about the design except maybe the curved back, the addition of the aluminum has somewhat made the Elm look more sophisticated compared with Sony Ericsson's older models.

    Features

In terms of features, the Sony Ericsson Elm reminds me of the G705 because it has 3G, WiFi, and GPS, something you won't be able to find in most candy bar mobile phones nowadays.

The homescreen is also similar to the Sony Ericsson Yari as it now has widgets. The Facebook widget is easily the most useful and you can leave it running on the homescreen so that it automatically downloads updates. It’s just too bad that the screen is small, this would have looked much better on a 2.5-3 inch screens.

The speakers are okay but audio quality tends to degrade in high volumes though you have to listen very closely as the volume is not that loud. Everything is much better when using a headset, even the headset provided with the phone has great sounds so it means you don’t need to buy expensive headsets to enjoy your music as the Sony Ericsson Elm is a really good music player.

The Sony Ericsson Elm has a 5 megapixel camera and for what it’s worth, it’s actually a pretty decent cameraphone. It has autofocus, face detection and smile shot but it’s not these camera features that wowed me but the image quality. Colors are well saturated and you don’t need to tweak any white balance or exposure in order to capture great pictures.

The browser is also similar to the Sony Ericsson Yari and pages render fast so I don’t miss Opera Mini that much.

    Conclusion

As someone who’s not into touchscreen phones, I welcome the fact that Sony Ericsson made a traditional candy bar phone with features that match most of the popular touchscreen mobile phones today. Sure, as a smartphone maker, it seems Sony Ericsson is destined to fail but once in a while, they do something right and produce a gem like the Sony Ericsson Elm.

Well, well, look here. Palm has just announced that their newest WebOS phones: the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus will be available on O2 and Vodafone Germany come April 28th.

The original Palm Pre was first made available in Europe through O2 Germany and according to Palm, the latter was a very popular phone in the country so I guess its only natural that the company partners again with O2 but this time, it's not going exclusive as it will also make their latest mobile phones available to Vodafone Germany as well.

    HTC Legend Deals

Looking for HTC Legend deals on O2, Orange, or T-Mobile? Well, if you visit these networks' websites, you will most likely be disappointed because they don't have the HTC Legend page. This is because the HTC Legend is technically, exclusive to Vodafone here in the UK. And because Vodafone and HTC has formed this exclusive partnership, carriers such as O2, Orange, or T-Mobile are forbidden to offer the Legend with any of their mobile phone contracts.

Thankfully, there's a way around this. If you're itching to get the HTC Legend subsidize by any other mobile network except Vodafone, you can always visit third party retailers. Sites such as buymobilephones.net and intomobilephones.co.uk are offering the HTC Legend with carriers other than Vodafone. Buymobilephones.net is offering HTC Legend deals under Orange and O2 while intomobilephones.co.uk is only offering the Legend under Orange.

    Tesco's new iPhone Tariffs

So, what are some signs that a new iPhone is coming? First, some confirmation from a famous wall street journalist, the announcement of a new iPhone OS, and some price roll-backs from mobile phone providers such as Tesco.

The prices of iPhone 3G and 3GS have been reduced and there's a new 12 month contract for the £35 a month tariff and you only have to spend £100 for the iPhone 3G 8GB, £200 for the iPhone 3GS 16GB, and £275 for the iPhone 3GS 32GB. You can also get the iPhone 3GS 16GB for free if you can spend £45 monthly tariff for 24 months.

I'm baackk! Whew, that was a long vacation. Anyways, although I have unlimited mobile internet while I was in Hong Kong, I was barely able to check any mobile phone news because we were always out and I was busy sightseeing to check my phone. But for those of you who were on vacation as well, or just didn't have time to check any mobile news last week, here's what we might have missed:

    iPhone OS 4.0

The biggest news so far is Steve Job's announcement of iPhone OS 4.0. iPhone OS 4.0 bring new features to the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad like Multitasking, Social Gaming, iBooks (like on the iPad), support for Bluetooth keyboard (no more jailbreaking), themes, and app folders (organize your apps in a folder) to name a few. But the announcement of iPhone OS 4.0 doesn't necessarily mean a new iPhone is totally confirmed. Apple is still keeping that under wraps but if history repeats itself, when iPhone OS 3.0 was announced last year, it was followed by the announcement of iPhone 3GS in summer.

So, I've been in Hong Kong for five days now, unfortunately, I'm stuck in a hotel where there's no free internet access. Of course I could always buy PCCW's 1 day WiFi pass for HK$148 but if I'm staying for five days, I'm not going to spend that much on internet access for just checking my emails and occassionally updating my blog. So what's a budget traveler to do to get cheap internet access in Hong Kong? Two words: China Mobile.

I am currently on vacation for some needed R&R so I won't be able to update my blog that much. I'm in Hong Kong and I'm telling you, as a mobile phone blogger, I feel like I'm in paradise. Sure, Hong Kong may not be the first country to get the latest mobile phones like our friends over in Germany or Finland but they've got a VARIETY of phones and best of all--they're all unlocked!
