What is Mobile Broadband and what can it do for you?

0

Written on 7/31/2008 08:00:00 AM by poison_ivy

One of the advances of mobile phone technology is mobile broadband. To put it in terms which is easier understood for average users, mobile broadband is like having a DSL line on your cellular phone. Before mobile broadband, during the earlier stage of GSM technology, cell phones can connect to the internet via a dial-up connection. Your phone company charges you like they would a normal call so not many people actually use their cell phones for dial-up internet.

Then came GPRS. GPRS connection is faster than regular cellular line, however, some wireless carriers charges by the data download so it is still not feasible. After GPRS came EDGE which operates on the 2.5 GSM standard and then there’s 3G. 3G is a whole new network standard than GSM. It’s faster and even allows video calling over your mobile phone. But 3G is best known for allowing users to connect at broadband speeds using their mobile phones.

Even with 3G and HSPA connection possible, few people still use their mobile phones to connect to the internet for two reasons: First, wireless carriers still charge by the kilobytes downloaded so it is still rather expensive compared with just hopping on a free WiFi signal. Second, web browsers on a mobile phones are still limited and not even the Safari Browser on the iPhone can deliver a REAL desktop browsing experience.

There are some wireless carriers, however, that provides you with unlimited 3G use. They have a special sim card and a WAN modem which allows your laptop or desktop PC to connect to their 3G signal and have broadband internet anywhere where there’s a cellular signal. I’ve come across a website that allows you to compare mobile broadband providers so that you can get the best plans or deals. If you want, you can even use their broadband speed test to test out which of these providers have faster mobile broadband.

In some Asian countries, they charge 3G use by the minute so some can actually use their mobile phones as modems rather than buy an HSPA or 3G Modem. If only wireless providers would bring down the cost of mobile broadband use, imagine how easier it would be for businessmen to connect whenever, wherever they want. They don’t have to look for a WiFi signal anymore since anywhere there’s a cell phone signal, they’re good as connected. Now THAT’s connecting people.

    X-Files Ringtones and mobile content

    Written on 7/24/2008 03:19:00 PM by poison_ivy

So what better way to get in the mood for an upcoming movie but to download some ringtones of the movie theme? The X-Files movie has already opened in selected countries and I'm sure, mobile phone carriers are already putting up movie themed downloads such as X-Files ringtones, wallpapers, video downloads, etc. So, is there an X-Files mobile phone like what Nokia did with The Dark Knight Mobile Phone? Hmm, probably not since the former is not much of a blockbuster hit such as The Dark Knight. The X-Files: I Want to Believe movie will be shown in UK theaters on July 30th.

For those who can't afford a legitimate wallpaper downloads, you're probably just going to grab some wallpapers and screenshots from the Internet and adjust it according to the screen size of your phone. Well, whatever makes you happy. A wallpaper is not the same as a mobile phone theme so those Nokia users who wants X-Files themes for their mobile can find one here, while pocket PC users can find X-Files Pocket PC themes at pocketpcfreeware.mobi.

Nokia 6205 The Dark Knight Edition

    Written on 7/18/2008 04:47:00 PM by poison_ivy

Nope the Nokia 6205 The Dark Knight Edition isn't the actual mobile phone used by Morgan Freeman in the Dark Knight movie though I'd love to see what kind of phone was that but Nokia has jumped on The Dark Knight movie merchandising wagon and came up with their Nokia 6205 The Dark Knight Edition. The Nokia 6205 doesn't offer any high tech features. It won't magically turn off the lights of an entire building but the design itself might be worthy of a collector's attention.

The Nokia 6205 The Dark Knight Edition mobile phone is a flip phone and is coming exclusively to Verizon Wireless. There's a batman logo at the back of the phone plus the Nokia 6205 The Dark Knight Edition features a full movie trailer, wallpapers, Batman's voice ringtone, and animated screen savers from the film. Aside from the phone being all decked up by the Batman movie, other features include a 2 inch 262K display, 1.3 megapixel camera with flash, 58MB internal memory expandable via microSD, Bluetooth, and a touch sensitive front screen. The Nokia 6205 The Dark Knight Edition is also preloaded with Verizon's V Cast services and the Get it Now service so users can download ringtones, wallpapers, and other mobile content.

Sadly, the Nokia 6205 seems to be only coming stateside through Verizon wireless for $69.99.

    Rumors: Sony Ericsson W302

    0

    Written on 7/16/2008 12:58:00 AM by poison_ivy

Some Mobile Blog, particularly the sony ericsson blog, are reporting that the Sony Ericsson S302 will be available in a Walkman version, the Sony Ericson W302. According to the SEMC blog, the Sony Ericsson W302 will still sport the same design as the S302, just different branding.

I don't know whether this is true or just a mistake since I can't access the W302's profile on the wap page linked on the site. Both mobile devices sports the same features so I don't know why there's a need to brand it differently or what would be the most distinguishing feature of one over the other. Since the S302 is a camera phone will it have clearer pictures over the W302 or will the latter have better MP3 Ringtones playback or audio playback since it's a Walkman phone? One can only wonder and we'll just have to wait until July 22 (supposed date that it will be announced) to see whether this pans out.

    Overview: Nokia 7310 Supernova

    Written on 7/14/2008 08:30:00 AM by poison_ivy

And here we have yet another one of Nokia's Supernova phone line: the Nokia 7310 Supernova, a mid-range candy bar phone that is already available in US though we have yet to see it land in the UK.

    Design

Similar to the other Supernova phone line, the Nokia 7310 features an interchangeable Xpress-On covers, both the front and back covers can be replaced. Colors to choose from includes steel blue, wasabi green, and candy pink. Additional 5 colors are set to be released by Nokia. The Nokia 7310 sports the no-nonsense candy bar look that Nokia has been famous for. Another thing that's different with the Nokia 7310 is that the Xpress-On covers are etched with 3D textured designs.

    Features

Though only a mid-range phone, the Nokia 7310 has a TV out so you can share your pictures or play the pre-installed games right on your TV set. The 7310 also sports a 2 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, FM RDS radio, and an MP3 music player. Phone memory of the Nokia 7310 is only limited to 32MB though it can be expanded with a microSD card up to 4GB. The Nokia 7310 runs on Nokia's Series 40 platform and is compatible with GSM/EGSM 850/900/1800/1900 networks.

The 7310 also has a built-in web browser and has microUSB and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity.

    Outlook

Those looking for a simple but cute design, you can't get any simpler with the Nokia 7310 Supernova. The additonal bonus of a TV Out that would let you play games on your TV makes this a fun phone to have. It's like having your old family computer on your pocket.

    Motorola i335 Review

    0

    Written on 7/12/2008 01:53:00 AM by poison_ivy

The Motorola i335 is a business phone designed for those who never handles their mobile phones carefully. I don't know if local carriers have this on their line-up since it runs on IDEN 800/900 networks but if you can somehow manage to get this phone to work in the UK then you have a gem of a phone.

    Design

The Motorola i335 is a slim candy-bar phone with a rugged design. It's not exactly the prettiest of phones but if you're constantly mishandling your phone and dropping it, you really don't need a pretty phone. The Motorola i335 is built to military specifications so it's dust proof and waterproof. In fact, i think one of the US blog reviewers was able to drop it off a building and it still managed to survive. Talk about tough.

    Features

The Motorola i335 is not a smartphone, at least in my standards. It doesn't have the basic smartphone feature of email capability. However, it does have a nice set of features that might suit business needs of some companies. The Motorola i335 is one of few push to talk cell phones. The push to talk feature is like using your phone as a walkie-talkie. Of course, you need to be running the i335 on a compatible network for it to work. In the US, they offer unlimited push-to-talk with select business cell phone plans. If there's one thing I like about Motorola phones, it's the fact that even though they embellish their phones with other features, they still don't neglect the fact that it's a phone first and foremost so call quality is a must. Calls are clear on the Motorola i335 plus it also has Bluetooth and GPS capability. My only complaints is that features are very limited on the Motorola i335, I guess it's because it is designed mainly for business use.

    Conclusion

If you're a very simple person who just wants a mobile phone that has great call quality with a few features thrown in such as GPS, then you might fall in love with the Motorola i335.

    Mobile Friendly Website Templates

    1

    Written on 7/11/2008 07:36:00 AM by poison_ivy

More and more mobile phones are being equipped with XHTML browsers and the ability to surf the web. Though surfing the web on your mobile phone isn’t the same as surfing the web on your desktop computer, since mobile web browsers are continually being smart, more people will have access to the Internet ANYTIME and ANYWHERE.

With that said, is your website mobile friendly? Some bigger websites, in order to cater to mobile phone surfers, are making a separate website for them. Sites such as YouTube already have a mobile friendly site and so does Google. Since some can’t afford to have separate content for mobile phone users, webmasters are just using simple HTML codes in order to make their websites more pleasing to look at when being rendered on a mobile phone browser.

A mobile phone browser views a website differently than standard desktop browsers. A site that shows three columns may only show one column on mobile phone browsers. Plus additional codes such as flash, java, CSS, etc, are harder to read and requires browser compatibility or additional plug-ins. However, since more java based web browsers such as Opera Mini and NetFront Browser are getting smarter, you only need to do a little work on your site. Opera Mini and NetFront Browser uses a server so that websites would load much faster and users can have a more pleasing desktop browsing experience.

I think the most basic thing you should do in order to make your website more mobile friendly is to start with your website templates. The more basic your site template is, the faster it will load on a mobile phone and the greater the chances are that users would extend their visit on your site.

Don’t use too much flash-based website templates since only few mobile browsers support flash. Even the most advanced of mobile browsers such as Opera Mobile and Safari Browser offers only a little flash support. By “little” I mean, they are not yet compatible with sites made with the latest version of Adobe Flash.

Free website templates are in abundance on the Internet. In fact, on dreamtemplate.com alone, they already have thousands of website templates on their database. The key is just finding the perfect template that matches the overall theme of your website and yet it is simple enough with less clutter and simple images so that both mobile browsers and desktop browsers would render it and load it fast enough so that the end users can quickly browse what you have to offer.

    Overview: Nokia 7510 Supernova

    Written on 7/10/2008 04:32:00 PM by poison_ivy

Nokia 7510 Supernova emerald green front

The Nokia 7510 Supernova is another upcoming phone in Nokia's Supernova phone line which mainly caters to fashionistas.

    Design

The Nokia 7510 Supernova has a sleek fold design with an easy push-to-open side key. Like the others on the Supernova line, the Nokia 7510 has exchangeable Xpress-On front and back covers. The Xpress-On covers are available in storm blue, red, emerald green, and espresso brown. The Nokia 7510 has a solid metal hinge for those not comfortable not hearing a "click" once their phones once opened.

    Features

The Nokia 7510 Supernova has a hidden display, similar to those found in some Sony Ericsson and Motorola phones and the added feature of a landscape mode on the secondary display, a first I've seen on any mobile phones. The 7510 also has 2 megapixel camera with NIPS, LED flash and a 4x digital zoom. The large 2.2 inch QVGA display on the Nokia 7510 will let you view your pictures or browse the web in clear, crisp colors.
    Nokia 7510 supernova red

Music enthusiats will enjoy the Nokia 7510's stereo music player that supports MP3, AAC, and AAC+ plus RDS stereo FM radio. Don't expect to store your music on the phone memory since the Nokia 7510 only has 25MB of on board memory but it can be expanded via microSD slot.

The Nokia 7510 is compatible with 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 networks and also supports Micro USB and Bluetooth 2.0 connection.

    Outlook

The Nokia 7510 Supernova would surely catch the eyes of fashionistas everywhere. The iconic clamshell design plus the cool looking hidden display will already give it points as a fashion phone. However, the lack of any 3G connection would probably put off those who likes to surf the mobile web.

Sony Ericsson C905: The 8 megapixel camera phone

    0

    Written on 7/07/2008 01:17:00 PM by poison_ivy

    Sony Ericsson C905 front

The Sony Ericsson C905 is probably the most advanced camera phone I have seen to date (though I have heard that in Korea, there are already 10 megapixel mobile phones in the market). Sony Ericsson probably outdid themselves and if you were taken with the Sony Ericsson K850i, you’ll definitely be taken with the Sony Ericsson C905.

    Design and Features

The Sony Ericsson C905 is the first slider cyber-shot phone that I have seen. Its feature is probably the closest digital camera replacement you can find on a mobile phone: it has a 8.1 megapixel sensor, Xenon Flash, Auto focus, face detection, image stabilizer, red-eye reduction, and smart contrast. It doesn’t have an optical zoom but the 16x digital zoom will probably suit you well. Another cool feature on the Sony Ericsson C905 is that it has a buit-in GPS that allows geo-tagging. It also has a 160MB phone memory expandable with a memory stick micro. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong but I think that the Sony Ericsson C905 is Sony’s first mobile phone that supports TV-Out though you have to purchase a separate TV-Out cable from Sony.
    Sony Ericsson C905 back side
    Outlook

The Sony Ericsson C905 is a definite must-have phone for photo enthusiasts. Though don’t throw away your K850i yet since if you’re looking for Sony Ericsson C905 deals, you probably won’t find one just yet since everything I’ve seen in the Internet is just pre-orders plus unlocked and newly released phones such as the C905 will probably set you back £1,300 (US$700) so wait until a mobile phone carrier offers the Sony Ericsson C905 with a mobile phone contract so you can chop off around half off the price.

Nokia 7610 Supernova Lilac with white front

The Nokia 7610 Supernova is the first of four phones in the Nokia Supernova line. The Nokia Supernova joins Nokia’s N-series, Prism, XpressMusic line of mobile phones. According to Nokia, the Nokia Supernova Product range lets users express their personal lines through varying designs and exchangeable covers.

    Design

The Nokia 7610 Supernova features a slide out design and rounded curves. The Nokia 7610 also features Xpress-On covers and colors to choose from include muted gray, steel blue, and white. Another customization option for stylish users is the Theme Colorizer which enables users to capture a specific color and apply it to the Nokia 7610’s key illumination and wallpaper.

    Features

More than just a pretty face, the Nokia 7610 also features a 3.2 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and an 8x digital zoom. Multimedia options include a built-in RDS FM radio, stereo music player that can playback MP3, AAC, and AAC+, TV out, 30MB built in memory, and instant messaging. Connectivity options are GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0, Micro USB, and as previously mentioned, TV output. Sorry guys, no 3G on this one.

    Outlook

Once again, Nokia has proven that they dominate the mobile phone industry and the iPhone never even made a dent on their phone sales. Though Nokia already has their Prism line, which I think is more of their fashion phones, the Supernova line is more of their low to mid-range fashion phones. Though the features on the Nokia 7610 are pretty basic to medium range, the style factor of this phone might just hit the spot for those into fashion phones.

If you haven't noticed it yet, there's a mobile revolution going on. Everything is about portability, going wireless and being connected all the time. That is why you can find WiFi on almost every imaginable device, from picture frames to TV.

Though I'm a mobile phone addict, I was under the mistaken impression that mobile phones are just a passing fad. That is why I passed up the chance to buy some stocks of a wireless carrier and 5 years later the stocks I was supposed to buy has now increased 400%.

So what can be learned from my booboo? If you're into investing and franchising, your best bet is to invest in any communications franchises. Advertisers are finding their way on our mobile phones, ultra low-cost pcs or netpcs are popping up everywhere, more and more mobile phones are offering faster data transfers to cater to mobile web browsing. Proof that people are clamoring to be connected ANYTIME, ALL THE TIME.

So any business related to communications should not run out of customers, unless of course it becomes over saturated but like what any entrepreneurs say, strike while the iron is hot.
